Sandylion stickers - a nostalgia gut punch
My kingdom for the fuzzy sticker version of the exact hamster I had
Sandylion Sticker Designs opened for business in Markham, Ontario in 1981.
They had a factory that locals could visit and buy seconds at steep discounts. I’m still incredibly jealous.
Sandylion was sold to Trends International in 2010. They still sell stickers, but it’s not the same. Interestingly, a warehouse existed in Markham selling the old style as recently as 2011, per someone’s blog entry:
In the 90s/early 00s, there was a kiosk called Prairie Rubber Stamp Works at the Forks Market in Winnipeg. It sold rubber stamps, glitter, and other card-marking supplies, including rolls of Sandylion sticker sheets that you could carefully rip off and purchase, one square at a time. They were always so kind to me.
The stickers were also sold in three-packs.
I’m not the only one that misses them, based on the posts on r/nostalgia (and a very small sub at r/sandylionstickers):
Happily, you miss those little square sheets of goodness, you can buy SO many of them online.
I was surprised too!
Here are some of my favourites:
Here are some Etsy shops that sell vintage Sandylion by the sheet, or sometimes sealed packages:
I also found two websites that sells very similar Sandylion patterns. They might be re-printed and not originals. They look a little different. Still, it’s good to have options.
Silverlead Co. - Wholesale only
rainbowresource.com - U.S. only
There are often auctions of deadstock on sites like eBay as well, though some look like they are also re-prints.
Oh my!! I had SO many of these carefully stored in my desk drawer!
